Burmese Buddha Images

Dry Lacquer Buddha

The dry lacquer technique produced finely modelled hollow figures that were both strong and light in weight. In the dry lacquer process was widely used in Burma from the 1700s through the early 1900s, the image was shaped from clay, then wrapped in a lacquer-soaked cloth. A pliable mixture of sawdust, lacquer and glue was spread over the cloth and the features were further defined with a small knife. After the outside layer hardened, the clay core was washed away and a high-grade reddish brown lacquer was applied, dried, polished and gilded.
This enormous Pagan-style head, which is softened by Ava influences, most likely was covered with gold leaf except for the hair. The hair is in a style called durian spikes because it resembles durian fruit. Worn spots on the face where black shows through the reddish brown lacquer give the piece a special appeal.
Whilst the piece appears to be authentically produced—it is not very old.
Standing 98 cm in height when on its display stand - it is a massive, dominating and most impressive piece and needs a lot of space to be properly displayed.

Shan Sitting Alabaster Buddha

This Shan Sitting Buddha has excellent proportions, nice face and has been beautifully carved. Smooth lines and well balanced.
The piece has traces of lacquer and a very good patina. As usual—the back of the piece is only roughly carved. One of the better authentic examples of this often copied style.
